Auto QA Engineer

About the Role

As a QA Automation Engineer, you'll help build and evolve the automation architecture that keeps our platform reliable at scale, across exchange, predictions and futures. You'll be a core contributor to a suite of over 26,000 automated tests, around 24,000 functional API tests and 2,000 functional UI tests, and you'll help shape the QA frameworks used across every engineering team in the business.

We use AI tools as part of our normal engineering workflow, and we expect the same from you. AI is there to speed things up, it's not a substitute for engineering judgement. We're looking for people who understand why their code works, who can design a test architecture from first principles and explain the trade-offs behind it.

You'll work in Agile teams, building, testing and delivering features across our web and mobile products, supporting Matchbook's software across multiple jurisdictions as we grow into a leading global platform for exchange, predictions and futures.

Work is genuinely flexible. Fully remote is an option, and our distributed engineering team collaborates closely across time zones.

What You'll Be Doing

• ​Design, build and maintain automation frameworks in Python and Pytest that can scale with our 26k+ test suite
• ​Define and plan test cycles, and own test quality across integration, system, cross-browser, regression and deployment testing
• ​Design and maintain test plans, test scripts, test cases and test data
• ​Coordinate test activities with product owners, scrum masters and developers to keep Agile test cycles running smoothly
• ​Work with development leads to drive timely resolution of system defects
• ​Communicate clearly with multi-national teams on projects and issues
• ​Perform functional and non-functional testing of transactional business applications
• ​Contribute to ongoing QA framework improvements and test environment setup
• ​Mentor new hires and other QA engineers on automation and test practices
• ​Produce clear, accurate test progress reports and quality metrics
• ​Make informed calls that directly influence product quality and business outcomes

What We're Looking For

• ​Strong, hands-on experience building test automation in Python, ideally with Pytest. We don't use BDD or Cucumber-style frameworks, so we're after engineers, not step-definition writers. Solid expertise in another modern language such as Java or PHP is also valued.
• ​Real, demonstrable understanding of automation architecture and design. You should be able to explain why you made a framework decision, not just how you implemented it.
• ​Care and precision when writing shared or common test code. At our scale, one poorly designed piece of common code can add hours to execution time across the whole suite, so this isn't code you write on autopilot.
• ​Solid hands-on experience with Apache JMeter for performance and load testing
• ​Proven experience with API testing
• ​Working knowledge of Unix and MySQL
• ​Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools critically and effectively, without losing ownership of code quality
• ​Experience setting up and maintaining development and QA environments
• ​Knowledge of messaging or event streaming technologies such as RabbitMQ and Kafka
• ​Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a genuine drive for results
• ​An ownership mindset: you take initiative, work through obstacles and see things through
• ​Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills, with the ability to lead and mentor others on test practices
• ​Excellent written and spoken communication
• ​Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field

Nice to have

• ​Familiarity with Cassandra
• ​Experience in the gambling industry or familiarity with exchange betting
• ​Knowledge of Docker
• ​Understanding of QA best practices in distributed systems
